What Is
Pancake Day / Shrove Tuesday and
Why do we celebrate it?

Tiny Box always has a way of celebrating Pancake Day. Everyone loves pancakes and their own personalised toppings.
We thought it would be interesting to look into what Pancake Day really is and why we celebrate it.
Obviously, we'll have a little fun along the way!

When is Pancake Day?
Pancake day this year falls on Tuesday 28th February.

Why is it also called Shrove Tuesday?
The name 'shrove' comes from the word 'shrive', meaning absolution for sins by doing penance.
The explanation of the name comes from Christians trying to be 'shriven' before Lent arrived.

What is the meaning?
Christians would admit their sins at Confession and ask their priest for absolution.
When calling them to Confession, a bell would be rung, this bell was called the 'Pancake Bell' which still rings today.

How long has the tradition gone on for?
The pancake has a very long history and featured in cookery books as far back as 1439.
The tradition of tossing or flipping them is almost as old:

"And every man and
maide doe take their turne, And tosse their Pancakes up for feare they burne."
 (Pasquil's Palin, 1619).
